Message from the Principal
Werte Bradshaw Families,
First off, thank you to those that have completed our 2024 Online Parent Survey. Your feedback helps the growth and future of our School. If you want to participate in the survey, please see the below link to complete or contact our office to organise a paper copy. This is a great and simple opportunity to have your say in the direction of the school and highlight areas you think the school is doing well in and help us in identifying areas for future growth.
School Photos are also around the corner. This is the chance for students to capture that perfectly posed look, snap that annual solo picture and say cheese with their class mates. Make sure those smiles are ready and those hairdos are styled! Photos will commence on Monday 19th August.
We also have Book Week coming up next week, and we’re all excited to dive into stories, both old and new. Remember, families, that dressing up as your favourite book character is encouraged for our Book Week Dress Up Parade next Friday at our assembly. We look forward to seeing all the marvellous and wonderful costumes we know some of you have up your sleeves already.
Turning our attention to learning, students in Years 3-6 have started taking part in daily Spelling Mastery lessons. Students have all put in their very best efforts and have improved on their spelling already in just 2 short weeks. This program is used by many schools around the country and has proven to have a positive impact on improving students’ spelling skills. Our teachers have spent a number of staff meetings preparing and rehearsing the delivery of this program, and students have been very engaged and excited about their new spelling lessons each morning. If your child is in Year 3-6, ask them about some of the new words they’ve learnt to spell in the last couple of weeks! You might be surprised at their new skills.
Last but certainly not least, don’t miss our Preschool Family Fun Art Evening Fundraiser on Wednesday 21st August, from 5.00pm to 7.00pm to celebrate our youngest budding artists. It’s the time when your little Picassos will bring along their families to a fun night where they can proudly create their best art with everything from “abstract” splatters to “modern” portraits.
Many Thanks,
Ioana Suciu,
Assistant Principal

2024 Parent Survey
Every year schools in the Northern Territory distribute surveys for families.
The survey is extremely important in helping us identify how we are doing and how we might improve.
Last year, it was clear from the parent survey that families wanted more small group support for struggling readers and more opportunities to engage in activities that extend and enrich students.
Both of these are now in place and are continuing to grow. We have hired a reading intervention leader and 5 support staff to deliver small group literacy instruction across the school and we have worked closely with external providers of dance, sport, bike building and more to deliver programs across the school.
Please take 5-10 minutes to complete the survey.

The Chief Minister Reading Challenge
Reading opens the door to knowledge, sparks the imagination, sharpens the mind, and enriches the soul. It’s a journey of endless discovery and growth.
This is a friendly reminder to continue participating in the Chief Minister's Reading Challenge. Here's a quick checklist to ensure you're on track:
- 📝 Continue logging your books in the reading record.
- 📚 Let your teacher know how many books you have read.
- 🌟 Aim to reach the goal of 12 books by Friday 23rd August.
Remember, every book you read brings you closer to new adventures, knowledge, and rewards.
Keep up the fantastic work, and happy reading!

Cow-gratulations Transition Keily
A big congratulations to our Transition students in Miss Keilys class who are the 2024 NT Grand Champions for the Alice Springs Show Champion Cow competition. Transition Keily did an amazing job utilising the Australian Good Meat resources to enhance their awareness of pastoral industry.

Learning in 3/4 Dalton
The Patch group came and visited the school. This was a group that has come from the circus and want to pass their skills on to the school children. For our class this was a real highlight. Many students in our group loved learning how to cartwheel, handstand and bunny hop their legs over their head with some students pulling out one handers. Jahlen and Harley worked particular well together in the partner exercise where Jahlen stood upright on Harley’s back and Jahlen stood on Harley’s back. The cooperation and teamwork that the class displayed in building a human pyramid with everyone in the class was absolutely incredible!
In Maths our students have been learning how to order decimals from smallest to largest and identifying where they go on a number line. The students have been making steady progress. The next topic students are very excited to learn about is 3D shapes and money where they will get to buy prizes with printed dollars.
In English our students have continued to read about the boy who biked around the world. We have covered Tom’s (the main character) journey through Europe and he has just gone through Jordan and Egypt. We have observed French culture and religion which coincides with the partaking of the Olympic games. The students have enjoyed learning about the preservation of mummy’s and how they were buried with their personal treasures around them. Many students also said they have seen these in musuems!
In science the students have been learning about the characteristics of different fascinating animals such as the sloth, dinosaur bum worms and platypus’s. They have loved learning from Mr Howie the new science teacher who has captivated them by painting a cow in the field for them to view. He enables the students to become scientists and draws their wonder into the fascinating creatures!

Enrichment Learning
This week Patch Theatre visited our school and is performing at Araluen art center on Friday night. Work shops involved preschool to year 4. This included hand stands, cart wheel and pyramids. Thank you so much for visiting.
Last week we went to CMS to attend the Science and Engineering expo. The students learnt a lot. They made windmills to see how strong the fan can push and what speed it will create. Made bridges out of cardboard, masking tape and straws and put weight on wheels to see how much weight the bridge could hold. Communicated via lights to create sentences. Electra-city, students had to connect cords to make as many power stations on the board as they could, less cords made it harder. Made paper aeroplanes and launching them to see how far the plane would go and also aiming it so it could hit a target. Overall Bradshaw Primary School came 3rd place. Tim.H, Uncle Tiny and Ms Rhiannon are so proud of you all.
Last week we also went golfing with the SRC students to reward their hard work over last semester. It was a great few hours at the golf course. We had professional coaches that taught us some skills and then we went into small groups and did six holes. we all had a great day.

STEM lesson with Professor Howie
An excited delegation come to the Science Room stating that a little bird had fallen out of her tree’s nest, a Noisy Miner. The Y3/4 students worked carefully to take hold of the bird and bring it back to our STEM animal hospital 😊. We set up a temporary home in the Private Ward. It talked all day and was observed closely by a few classes. During lunch eating time, we were inside the Science Room, door ajar. The baby’s mother and father flew into the room on four occasions and spoke to their baby. Just prior to the last lesson, we took the baby outside in her box and sat under a tree. All four birds of the baby’s family came and sat in the tree above me. Talking regularly. The final class (1P) for the day came and I had them sit down with me. I had them go silently as I explained what was happening and they saw the baby’s family circle and rest in the tree directly above the baby, talking a lot. By this stage, we took bub out of the box (5 star accommodation with bed and pool) and held her in my hands as she spoke to 1P kids with parents above. We stood and moved toward the home nest with Mum and Dad and siblings circling but without swooping. Baby talking constantly all day and still going as I negotiated with 1P as to what part of the tree I should use to return bub.
The baby was happily reunited with family. We all learnt heaps, and it felt kind of miraculous. No swooping, baby comfortable, not trying to scramble away from me as I picked her up from time to time. And finally the baby and family reunited in the tree, all safe. The baby did not fall again. 😊
Great day in science.
Thanks to Mark for putting up our new “Native Bee Home” on the huge gum tree near Science. It’s empty, but a case of, “If you build it, they will come!”
