Update from Leadership
Dear Bradshaw families,
Thank you for your continued support this term. I cannot believe that ten weeks have passed so quickly! It has been a fantastic start to 2021. We have seen our school grow in size as we have welcomed a number of families who have enrolled their children at Bradshaw.
A letter was sent home this week to all families outlining changes in our school structure and the introduction of another class. With our increasing enrolments, a new Year 3/4 class has been added, bringing Bradshaw up to 20 classes. Pip Mapstone and Colleen Marzohl will be team teaching 3/4MM. Both are highly accomplished teachers who are excited at the prospect of working together and with the new group of students. This class will be located in the demountable.
Students in the 3/4 class are the Year 3’s from 2/3L and the Year 4’s from 4/5A. Joelene Liddle will teach Year 2 and Pat Anderson a Year 5 class. There are some other student moves to facilitate smaller, equitable class sizes providing our students with greater teacher attention.
Science will continue to be taught by David Williams in students’ classrooms. Look out for the Science Trolley bringing learning about light, sound, heat and energy to the classroom. Nadine Price is taking Long Service Leave for Term 2 and we are delighted that Lucy Manchester is returning to work with our Early Childhood students. Our new Transition teacher Melanie Stubbings arrived yesterday just in time to meet her class and wish them a happy holiday.
The Leadership Team at the school will remain the same for Term 2 while the Principal position continues in the recruitment phase.
Our improved school structure will give us room to place new enrolments as the year progresses. As with all change there will be a time of supporting and settling staff and students. Please reassure your child around changes and that all the staff at Bradshaw are here for their social, emotional and academic well-being. We thank you for your ongoing support.
I would also like to take the opportunity to introduce the Alert program we have started using at our school.
You would have heard by now that all teachers and support staff participated in a Professional Learning Day about sensory processing and self-regulation. The aim of this day was for staff to come together to learn from an Occupational Therapist about these two things. We then learnt about the Alert Program and worked together to create a series of lessons to explicitly teach our students about emotional self-regulation using the metaphor of a car.
You also probably heard your child say ‘My engine is running low/high/just right’. Were you confused about why your child is talking about an engine? We are using the metaphor of an engine across the school to help students learn how to talk about self-regulation. We all have an “engine” — that part that gets us out of bed, propels us through the day, and drops our head back on the pillow at night. When engines are running “just right,” then it’s easy to be attentive, focused, and alert (to self-regulate) throughout the day. We move between these three states of alertness (low, just right and high). Each one has its place. “Just right” is the one we want your child to be in for learning or making friends at school.
The car metaphor is useful and most children and adults relate to it well. Young children like the playful side of it; adults drive and own cars so they understand it from a practical standpoint. I encourage you to have conversations with your children at home about engine speeds. Start by identifying your own engine speed and talking about it (for example, say: ‘I am so tried right now, my engine is running so slow and I am feeling sleepy’; ‘I’ve had such a great nights sleep, had my coffee, shower and now my engine is running just right. I am ready to start my day!). Once you have identified your engine speed, ask about theirs. You will be surprised about their interest in this conversation!
Our teachers have started teaching using the car metaphor and the students have shown not only great interest and understanding in the language, but some of the upper primary students have started using these concepts to reflect on friendships and other students’ needs.
The next step in our teaching and learning of alert levels is for students to identify their sensory needs in relation to their engine speeds. For example, when I am hungry, I cannot concentrate; if I’m playing footy it’s better that my engine is running high; If I need to be in the class studying, then I need my engine to run just right.
If you have any other questions or would like to find out more about the Alert program, you are always welcome to come in for a visit and a chat with your child’s teacher or myself.
On behalf of all Bradshaw Staff we wish you a relaxing holiday break and look forward to seeing everyone on Monday 19th April.

Medical Record left at front office
An Asthma Action Plan was recently left at the front office but unfortunately is does not have the student’s name on it. If your child has asthma and the details below seem familiar to you, please contact the office urgently:
Recently saw Dr Goddard, the Respiratory Paediatrician at the hospital
Has an updated Asthma Action Plan
Use Seretide daily as a preventer
Uses Ventolin as a reliever
If you think this could be your childs asthma plan please come in and see us at the front office.
1/2S Mathematicians
1/2S have thoroughly enjoyed Numeracy this term. Some of the topics we have learnt about are 2D Shapes, Place Value, Months of the Year and Number Lines. We are clever mathematicians.

Fun and Learning in Transition Clarke
Transition Clarke has had a great start to school this term. We have done so much learning - it's hard to believe we've only been at school for 10 weeks! In writing, we have been focusing on recounts and have learnt to identify the 'who, what, when and where' in texts. In numeracy, our focus has been on numbers, patterns and shape. Discovery Learning is our favourite part of the day. This is when we apply our curriculum content in to play based activities. Have a restful holiday break, ready for more learning in Term 2! Miss Clarke.
