Week 3, Term 4 2020
Update from Leadership
Welcome to another amazing week at Bradshaw. Students have settled back into their learning and have set goals to achieve their absolute best before the end of the year. One way that parents of senior students can help is to closely monitor their child’s use of social media. At school we provide lessons in the safe use of social media however, there has been a spike in the number of students coming to school upset by social media interactions that have occurred over the weekend. This negatively affects the students’ ability to concentrate on their learning. Social media platforms such as Tik Tok, Instagram and Snapchat recommend a person be 13 years old to have their own account. Most primary school students are not emotionally equipped to deal with some of the content they can be exposed to on these sites. Please take the time to talk with your child about the importance of the safe use of social media as cyberbullying can have devastating consequences. There is some useful information for parents at https://www.esafety.gov.au .
Swimming lessons begins next week for our Transition and Year 1 students and the following week Year 2 and Year 3 students will enjoy their time at the pool. Please make sure all notes and money have been returned and that students are ready to participate each day.
Bradshaw will be participating is some NAIDOC week activities in Week 5. There will be some art activities, kangaroo tail tasting, dance, fashion parade and generally a celebration of the language and culture of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. At Bradshaw, we do a lot to acknowledge Arrernte language by all learning some Arrernte words, by painting Arrernte words on the walls, by renaming our sports teams and naming our classroom blocks using the Arrernte word for some birds. Next week we are beginning Perdame lessons for an identified group of students. Students from Batchelor Institute who are family for some of our students are excited to teach Perdame to family at Bradshaw as it is an endangered language of Central Australia.
Today we have a film crew from SBS filming two of our amazing teachers, Marissa Priestley and Joyce Ralph, for an upcoming show about a NAIDOC First Nations Mentor Project. We have many dedicated and talented teachers at Bradshaw so make sure you acknowledge them this week as Friday we celebrate World Teacher’s Day. Many of our teachers were nominated for a Teach in The Territory Award with Michele Turk, Lara Phillips and Joyce Ralph being selected as finalists. We congratulate them and wish them well.
Book Week
CBCA Book Week 2020 “Curious Creatures, Wild Minds”
What an awesome week of fun we had at Bradshaw last week! We would like to say a massive thank you to all of our staff and families for supporting Book Week at Bradshaw.
Our students enjoyed putting their imagination into overdrive to come up with some amazing creatures for our “Curious Creature Drawing Competition”. Well done to our winners – William Fleming, Amelia Mitchell and Abel George.
We had an enjoyable day dressing up as either curious creatures or our favourite book characters on Tuesday. Congratulations to our winners who took home a $10 voucher to be spent at next week’s Book Fair. We also held a Book Swap day where every student had the opportunity to take home a pre-loved book.
All week in the Library we shared our love for reading and enjoyed the magic of books. Every day we had the pleasure of listening to our brave readers in our “Bradshaw Can Read Talent Quest” where students read aloud 10 lines of their favourite book. The winners will be announced during Assembly next week.
Never underestimate the power of reading. A good novel or picture book can take you to faraway places without even leaving where you are!!
Happy Reading and Kind Regards,
Mrs Leisa Cousins

PS - The theme for the CBCA Book Week 2021 has been announced – “Old Worlds, New Worlds, Other Worlds”.

Hats and Water Bottles
Just a reminder to our Bradshaw Families that as we get into the hotter weather it is essential that all students have a wide brimmed hat and a water bottle. As apart of our COVID guidelines, students are not permitted to drink out of the bubbler so we advise families to bring a water bottle to fill up throughout the day.
